Bridget "Biddy" Mason (1818–1891) was a trailblazer in real estate, rising from slavery to become one of the first Black women to own significant property in Los Angeles. After winning her freedom in 1856, she worked as a midwife and saved her earnings to invest in land at a time when few African Americans owned property. Her real estate acquisitions in what is now downtown L.A. grew in value, making her one of the wealthiest women in the city. Mason’s real estate success laid the foundation for generational wealth and helped shape the growth of Los Angeles. In addition to her property ventures, she founded the city’s first African Methodist Episcopal Church and was a dedicated philanthropist, using her wealth to support charities, schools, and the local Black community. Her contributions are commemorated on the National Register of Historic Places.
We named our company *Biddy Transactions* to honor this trailblazer who overcame so many odds. Her story inspires us and serves as a constant reminder that the sky is the limit.
